Introduction

Virginia is a state that's big enough to offer something for everyone. Whether you want to visit famous museums and monuments, catch some waves or ski the slopes, there's something for everyone in Virginia.

Get a taste of the Old Dominion.

Virginia is known as the Old Dominion, a term that dates back to 1609 when King James I made the area a royal colony. Virginia was named after Queen Elizabeth I, who ruled over England during this time period.

Virginia was founded in 1607 by English explorer John Smith and some fellow colonists on a small island off the coast of what is now Cape Henry, near Norfolk. They named their new settlement Jamestown after Elizabeth I's husband King James VI of Scotland (and later also England). The first permanent English settlement in North America was established only five years before Plymouth Rock!

Although Jamestown struggled at times—it almost didn't survive its first winter because most people were sick with scurvy or starved to death—it did eventually become successful thanks partly due to tobacco exports from nearby plantations.

A town that embraces the outdoors.

When you think of outdoor activities, you probably picture yourself on a mountain hiking trail or on a boat in the ocean. While these are great options, there are so many other ways to experience nature in Virginia. For example, if you enjoy swimming or fishing, there are several lakes and ponds throughout the state where those activities can be enjoyed. You could also visit one of our national parks or forests for an opportunity to see some of America's natural beauty without having to travel very far from home!

There are many reasons why getting outside and enjoying nature is important: it helps reduce stress levels and improve moods by reducing feelings of anger and anxiety which can occur when we spend too much time inside away from fresh air; it provides us with opportunities for exercise which helps maintain healthy bodies; visiting local parks or hiking trails can give us time alone or with friends/family members away from technology so we don't feel overwhelmed by technology at home either (which has been shown

Virginia's mountain playground.

You'll find plenty of small towns and big cities in Virginia, but the state's natural beauty is its biggest attraction. With a diverse landscape of mountains, rivers, lakes and forests you can explore on foot or by boat.

The Appalachian Trail runs through Virginia for more than 200 miles from southern Maine to northern Georgia. The Blue Ridge Parkway is a 469-mile scenic drive along the ridge of the Appalachians from Shenandoah National Park in Virginia to Great Smoky Mountains National Park in North Carolina. It features overlooks offering panoramic views of valleys below and mountains beyond. The James River flows along three national parks: Richmond National Battlefield Park; Colonial National Historical Park; and Jamestown Settlement which offers daily living history programs with costumed interpreters who portray colonial figures such as Pocahontas. Shenandoah National Park has an extensive network of trails where visitors can hike through pristine forests or tour an Appalachian farmstead while learning about rural life during the 19th century at Historic Deerfield Farm & Craftsman Village just outside Front Royal VA

Taste, sip and delight in this winery town.

Virginia is one of the largest wine-producing states east of the Mississippi River, and even if you don't know much about wine, you've probably heard its name before. Located on the northern coast, it's home to many vineyards that are ideal for growing grapes: Virginia's climate is mild year-round and its soil is rich in nutrients. In fact, there are about 300 wineries in Virginia alone—more than 1,200 varieties of grapes! As for what to do once you're there...

While many choose to hike up mountains or go kayaking down rivers (or both!), others prefer having a glass of chilled white wine from one of those local vineyards while enjoying a scenic vista. Or they might take their time driving through small towns like Broadway or Front Royal—both known for their charming downtown areas filled with shops selling everything from fine art to traditional crafts made by local artists. And if your taste buds crave something more substantial than just seasonal fruit juice cocktails? Then head right over to Amisfield Winery Restaurant where they serve delicious dishes like charcuterie boards made with locally sourced meats cut fresh daily by hand; pizza topped with local tomatoes grown just outside Charlottesville; housemade pasta dishes served al dente; homemade breads baked fresh daily...you get the idea!

A colonial city with a cosmopolitan side.

Williamsburg is a colonial city with a cosmopolitan side. It’s just over two hours from Washington, DC and Richmond, VA, so it’s easy to get there from anywhere in the region.

This historic town has much to offer visitors—and residents! It was founded as a capital of Virginia by King James I in 1699, making it one of the oldest cities in America. It’s also home to some of America's most beautiful parks and natural areas: Colonial National Historical Park (aka Jamestown), Yorktown Battlefield Park, and Busch Gardens Williamsburg theme park are all right here in town.

A beach town with a new attitude.

Virginia Beach is a great place to visit. It has a long, sandy beach that is perfect for swimming and sunbathing. There are many things to do in the area, including visiting local shops and restaurants. You can also spend time at museums like the Virginia Air & Space Center or the Battleship Wisconsin.

This exciting city has been around for more than 50 years, but now it's finally getting recognition as one of America’s most popular tourist destinations!

Explore the Blue Ridge Parkway by fall.

It's not just the leaves that are changing colors in fall. The weather is cooler and crisp, which makes it the perfect time to enjoy outdoor activities like hiking, camping, or biking. You'll also see plenty of wildlife during this season such as bears and deer. Plus, you can catch some beautiful views of the Blue Ridge Mountains while driving along the Parkway!

A day at the beach, an hour from home.

The beach at [location] is a great place to spend a day. The sand is soft and the water is warm, making it a perfect spot for swimming or just relaxing on the beach. If you don't have time to get there, bring your bathing suit and towel and follow these steps:

  • Drive about one hour from home to [location].

  • Park in one of the free parking lots near [location].

  • Walk across the bridge over Highway 1 onto White Rock Beach (or take any other route available).

  • Enjoy your time at the beach!

Locally made goods await in this southern gem.

Virginia is home to more than 250 wineries, breweries and distilleries. These locally made goods are not only delicious but also sustainable: the state's craft beverage industry creates jobs and strengthens communities by supporting local farmers and suppliers. In fact, Virginia wine alone generates nearly $300 million annually for the state economy.

If you're looking for a place to try some fine Virginia wine (or beer or spirits), you don't have to go far. The state has hundreds of wineries that can offer tours, tastings and vineyard views from their tasting rooms or outdoor spaces—and many even have on-site lodging options that include breakfast in the morning!

The nation’s most historic street welcomes you to stay, shop and relax.

In the heart of Virginia’s historic district, you will find a town that welcomes its visitors with open arms. The streets are lined with shops and restaurants where you can find everything from handmade jewelry to delicious seafood. Stay at one of the many hotels in the area or one of our bed and breakfasts to enjoy all that Fredericksburg has to offer.

From Hampton Roads to the mountains, venture around the state to find fun things to do while social distancing and enjoying the great outdoors!
