GREEN BELT
The Green Belt is a program that preserves open space for the public. There are over 1,000 miles of greenbelts across the state of Texas, encompassing over 2 million acres of land. These greenbelt areas are preserved for recreation, wildlife habitat and agriculture. This program is administered by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD).
The Green Belt Program was established in 1961 as part of a larger effort to protect scenic natural resources from urban sprawl and uncontrolled land use changes. It provides protection for both private property owners and conservation organizations who wish to dedicate county or state land in their possession as part of this gigantic public park system.
