Introduction
Tennessee is an amazing state full of incredible beauty, history, and culture. It's no wonder that more than 12 million people visit the Volunteer State each year. We've put together this guide to help you plan your trip to Tennessee—from ways to get around the state to where you should stay when you're there.
Franklin
If you're looking for some country charm and southern hospitality, Franklin is the place to go. The city has been named one of the best places to raise a family by Family Circle Magazine, and it's easy to see why--the city has a lot to offer. From an impressive art scene to historical sites, this small town will keep you busy.
In addition to being named one of America's Top 100 Small Towns by Rand McNally & USA Today as well as one of America's Coolest Small Towns by Budget Travel Magazine in 2013, Franklin was also voted top 10 Best Places for Small Town Charm by CNN Money Magazine in 2007.
Memphis
Memphis is the home of Stax Records and a city where you can visit Graceland, which is Elvis Presley’s estate. It's also the site of an Egyptian-themed pyramid that is the tallest in the world.
The area has great food (especially barbecue), music, and culture. You can get everything from hot fried chicken to BBQ ribs there!
Nashville
Nashville, Tennessee
Nashville is the capital of Tennessee and also known as "Music City," so you might be able to guess what kind of attractions are waiting for you in this city. While there are plenty of opportunities to catch a show at any number of venues across Nashville, there's no need to worry about missing out on anything happening when you're staying at one of our hotels near Broadway or East Nashville.
The Ryman Auditorium is one such place where fans can go see their favorite musicians perform live music every day. Just down the street from The Ryman Auditorium is Tootsies Orchid Lounge (also known as Tootsies), which has been around since 1914 and still serves up some of the best drinks in town today!
Pigeon Forge
The Pigeon Forge is a city in Sevier County, Tennessee, United States. It is located just south of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and has become a major attraction for families traveling to the area.
Sevierville
Sevierville is a must-see location on any trip to Tennessee. The city is home to Dollywood, one of the country’s most famous theme parks. In addition to its famous rides, Dollywood also has plenty of food options—including several restaurants that are housed inside actual shipping containers! There are also plenty of great places to eat closer to downtown Sevierville.
The Smoky Mountains are just 30 minutes west from Sevierville and make for an unforgettable day trip or weekend getaway. If you don’t have time for that long of a trip, don’t worry: there are still plenty of things to do within the city limits itself!
Chattanooga
Chattanooga is a beautiful city that has plenty of culture to offer. You’ll find many restaurants and bars, as well as museums and galleries in this bustling downtown area.
Chattanooga also has plenty of outdoor activities for you to enjoy; try hiking at Lookout Mountain, or go whitewater rafting on the Tennessee River!
There’s no shortage of fun things to do in Chattanooga: visit the Aquarium, ride the Incline Railway up Missionary Ridge (the highest point above sea level between New Orleans and Denver) or take a cruise on Lake Chickamauga. You could even go horseback riding through the scenic trails just outside of town!
Gatlinburg
Gatlinburg is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Tennessee. It's located in the Great Smoky Mountains and has a lot to offer: attractions like Ripley's Aquarium and Ober Gatlinburg, restaurants like Mama Ninfa's Tacos and Grille, shops like Cades Cove Center, and hotels like Bays Mountain Inn & Suites.
Murfreesboro
Murfreesboro is the county seat of Rutherford County, which was originally named for Colonel William R. Rutherford. Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) is located here, as well as the largest population of people of Irish descent in the United States. With a population more than 100,000 and growing, Murfreesboro is a great place to visit if you're looking for an affordable vacation that has plenty to offer travelers.
The city itself has many things worth checking out while you're there:
Murfree Spring Park – This historic site features several buildings and monuments that date back to when Rutherford County was first founded. It also includes numerous activities such as hiking trails and picnic areas where visitors can enjoy spending time outdoors with friends or family members while getting some exercise at the same time!
Stones River National Battlefield – A Civil War battlefield site located just south of downtown Murfreesboro where two armies fought against each other during one particularly bloody battle during America's War Between The States (1861–1865). Visitors will learn about both sides' perspectives on this conflict through interpretive programs offered by interpretive staff who work here today!
Jackson
Jackson is the capital of Tennessee, a city in the south central part of the state. The population is just over 67,000 people, but it also serves as home to several colleges and universities. Jackson was named after President Andrew Jackson by an act of Congress on December 23rd, 1828. In addition to being home to Tennessee’s government offices and legislature, it also has several notable attractions that can help you get a sense of what makes this city so special.
Jackson City Museum
This museum features exhibits on local history that date back all the way to prehistoric times through present day artifacts from around Madison County. They have guided tours available daily as well as self-guided tours for those who want to learn more about what happened here at their own pace. There are even special events like “Civil War Days” which give visitors an opportunity hear about life during this time period from reenactors who bring history alive with their costumes and performances!
Clarksville
Clarksville, a city in the U.S. state of Tennessee, and the county seat of Montgomery County. It is located in the northwest corner of Middle Tennessee, about 45 miles (72 km) north of Nashville and 6 miles (9.7km) south of Kentucky Lake on Interstate 24. The population was 130,354 at the 2010 census.[3]
The city is named for John Clark who operated an inn there during his term as postmaster from 1801 to 1805.[4]
Knoxville
Knoxville is the largest city in eastern Tennessee and the third largest city in the state overall. It’s home to the University of Tennessee, which has been ranked as one of America's best colleges by Forbes and U.S. News & World Report. Knoxville is also known as "The Scruffy City," a nickname that references its culture and people—many locals embrace an eccentric vibe and enjoy being loud and proud about it!
While there are many things to do in Knoxville, my top picks would be:
Visit Sunsphere Tower at sunset for stunning views of downtown (and watch out for bats!)
Attend a concert at Bijou Theater
Check out Choo Choo Barn at USA Harvest-Food Bank Farm
Tennessee is the place to be.
Whether you’re looking to enjoy the great outdoors or spend time with family and friends, Tennessee has plenty to offer. Smoky Mountains National Park is one of America's most visited natural wonders, but it's just one of many national parks in Tennessee.
Tennessee is also home to several historic sites including Colonial National Historical Park in Jamestown and Andrew Jackson's Hermitage in Nashville. If you’re more into modern history than colonial times, visit Fort Donelson National Battlefield where General Ulysses S Grant defeated Confederate forces during the Civil War.
There are also countless outdoor activities available throughout the state including hiking at Cumberland Gap, horseback riding through Chilhowee Mountain Adventures in Pigeon Forge or whitewater rafting down the Little Pigeon River with Outdoors Unlimited at Rock Island State Park.
Conclusion
If you’re looking for a fun place to travel and explore, then Tennessee is the perfect destination. The state has so much to offer from music festivals and sporting events to beautiful scenery and rich history.
