Introduction
Missouri is a state located in the Midwest. It borders eight other states: Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Iowa and Kansas. The name Missouri comes from the Missouri River and from the fact that Missouri is located in the center of North America.
Missouri is sometimes referred to as the Mother of the West, because of its central location and its history as a starting point for many settlers heading west.
More than any other state, Missouri is often referred to as the Mother of the West. Although this might seem like a strange statement, it has historical significance and meaning for those who have spent time there.
Missouri was one of the first states to be settled by Europeans in America. Because of its central location, Missouri became an important stop for settlers heading westward towards what eventually became known as "the American frontier."
Missouri has more than 6,000 caves; an estimated 5,000 haven't been discovered.
Did you know Missouri has more than 6,000 caves? The Ozark Plateau region is home to this impressive number of caves. Some are open for tourism and others remain privately owned. In fact, there are an estimated 5,000 caves in the state that have yet to be discovered!
Missouri's caves are a source of revenue for the state. Each year, about one million people visit Missouri's 60 public caves that have been developed as tourist destinations. The tourism industry brings in millions of dollars each year through entrance fees and gift shops at these attractions.

The Gateway Arch in St. Louis was completed on October 28, 1965. President Lyndon B. Johnson dedicated this 630-foot structure during a ceremony held on May 25, 1968.
The Gateway Arch is an important part of St. Louis’ history, as it was constructed to commemorate the westward expansion of America. The arch was designed by Eero Saarinen, who won a national competition sponsored by the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial Association (JNEMA) in 1947.
The Gateway Arch monument stands 630 feet tall, making it the tallest man-made monument in the United States and Western Hemisphere. It also has a width of 190 feet at its base and spans 630 feet from end to end at its highest point when measured vertically between the foundations. The Gateway Arch weighs more than 58 million pounds, or about 15 times as much as Washington Monument in Washington, D.C., which is 555 feet tall but only weighs 2000 tons! This makes it difficult for us mere humans on Earth's surface below because when winds blow through St., Louis they pick up speed passing over this massive structure which creates an area known locally as "the vortex".
The St. Louis MetroLink transit system opened on July 31, 1993 with just 17 miles of track and 18 stations in operation. Today (2016), it is 46 miles long with 37 stations serving East St. Louis, IL; St. Clair County, IL; Madison County, IL; Knox County, MO; Jefferson County, MO; and St. Louis County, MO -- carrying 50 to 60 thousand people each day!
MetroLink is a light rail system serving the Greater St. Louis area of Missouri and Illinois. It has 46 miles of track and 37 stations, carrying 50 to 60 thousand people each day. It opened in 1993 with just 17 miles of track and 18 stations, but has expanded several times since then.

The Gateway Arch in St. Louis was completed on October 28, 1965. President Lyndon B. Johnson dedicated this 630-foot structure during a ceremony held on May 25, 1968.
The arch is a memorial to the pioneers who explored and settled the West (it was built as part of the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial). It’s also a monument to those who helped build it: men who worked long hours and often performed dangerous tasks to construct this architectural wonder with their own hands—no machines required!
