Introduction
The Maine Coast is a mecca for hikers, anglers and other nature lovers. The quiet villages and towns dotting the shoreline are filled with historic lighthouses, charming inns and great seafood restaurants. In addition to all this natural beauty, it's also one of America's most scenic drives! So if you're looking for an easy getaway that combines culture, history, art and nature then the Maine Coast is just what the doctor ordered!
Acadia National Park
Acadia National Park is a great place for those looking for hiking, biking, boating and camping options. This park is home to the tallest mountain on the East Coast: Cadillac Mountain. The views from its summit are spectacular—you can see all the way out to Mount Desert Island and into Canada! In addition to hiking trails and serene scenery, Acadia offers several campgrounds where you can pitch your tent or park an RV. There are also hotels nearby if you’re not feeling like roughing it on your vacation.
Bar Harbor
Bar Harbor is a town in Hancock County, Maine. It was named for the harbor located on its waterfront. The town is a popular tourist destination and has been since the 19th century when it became a retreat for the rich and famous. Today, it’s home to several museums, art galleries and restaurants as well as some of the best seafood you can get anywhere in New England.
Camden
Camden is a town on the coast of Maine. It's a popular tourist destination, known for its art galleries and restaurants. The town is home to the Maine Maritime Museum, which has exhibits on the state's history as an early seafaring culture.
You can also see remnants of Camden's past at Fort Knox (also known as Fort Popham), built in 1808 during the War of 1812 to protect Portland Harbor from British attacks. Today it sits on Castle Hill overlooking Casco Bay with great views and trails perfect for hiking or biking!
Portland
Portland, Maine is a great place to visit! There are many things to do in Portland. The city has beautiful architecture, and there’s plenty of history - it was founded as a seaport in 1632 by settlers from England and Massachusetts. Today, Portland is known as an artsy city with lots of fun things to do.
Portland has excellent restaurants and breweries, including the famous Voodoo Doughnut shop that serves up unique donuts like maple bacon barbeque cake doughnuts (yes, they really exist). You can also find great seafood here; some local favorites include lobster rolls (which are basically subs made with lobster instead of meat), crab cakes made fresh daily at local markets such as Ocean’s Seafood Market & Grill or Blue Heaven Restaurant & Bar on Commercial Street.
If you want to take your kids along for the trip but still have time for yourself in between activities with them - no problem! There are tons of kid-friendly activities available: when we visited last year my son loved seeing all the sculptures outside around town like "The Bubbler" which shoots water out into a fountain where people can play under it. He also had fun visiting Children's Museum Maine where he got inside giant bubbles created by high pressure air jets before playing at its indoor playground area where he could climb on equipment similar to what you might find outside only more colorful!
Kennebunkport
Kennebunkport is a town in York County, Maine. It's located on the southern coast of Maine and is known for its beaches and sailing. The town is close to both Portland and Scarborough.
Boothbay Harbor
Boothbay Harbor is a town in Lincoln County, Maine, United States. The population was 2,939 at the 2010 census. Boothbay Harbor includes the village of Tremont.
The harbor was known as "Booth's Bay" until 1858 when the spelling was changed to honor Captain James Booth (1793-1861), who founded the village and built its first commercial docks in 1829.
Boothbay Harbor is home to Lighthouse Island Park, which houses two lighthouses: Portland Head Light and Owls Head Light.[12][13] The park also features several hiking trails along rocky coastlines and through forests.[14] The Great Diamond Island Regional Park has picnic areas.[15]
